Yes, coaching is in vogue. I don’t think it’s just a passing trend. Its popularity is simple: it works. People who have experienced the transformative power of coaching enthusiastically recommend it to friends and loved ones, fueling word-of-mouth as the best form of marketing. This is because coaching, in many cases, not only enhances but transforms lives.
In countries like the United States, Germany, and the UK, seeking out a coach for personal or professional issues has become a common practice, and it’s starting to gain momentum in other countries as well.
Many of you who read my blog (to whom I’m very grateful!) ask what a coach does and how I can help you. Today, I want to delve into this: what is coaching, what does a coach do, and how can it benefit you, whether personally or professionally?
What coaching is NOT:
To better understand the concept of coaching, it’s useful to start by clarifying what it is not:
Coaching is not therapy or psychotherapy. These focus on treating mental health issues, often examining the past to resolve deep emotional matters. Coaching, on the other hand, is oriented towards the present and future, helping the client (or coachee) set clear goals and create a plan to achieve them. The process is practical, structured, and usually lasts between 10 to 20 weeks.
Coaching is not mentoring. Unlike a mentor, who offers advice based on their own experience in a specific field, a coach doesn’t tell you what to do. Their role is to guide you to find your own solutions. This approach fosters a high level of personal satisfaction, as you move forward on your own with the coach’s support and tools.
Coaching is not advising or consulting. A consultant provides answers and specific strategies. A coach helps you gain clarity through questions and conversations, pushing you to discover what you truly need to reach your goals.
What can you work on with a coach?
Basically, you can work on any aspect of your life, except mental health issues. Coaches follow a strict ethical code, and if there’s any indication of a possible psychological disorder, it is our responsibility to refer the client to an appropriate professional, such as a psychotherapist. Examples of these situations include severe depression, severe anxiety, addictions, serious self-esteem issues, or eating disorders.
Here are some examples of common topics I work on with my clients:
Personal Area:
Discovering your purpose and sense of life
Changing unhealthy habits
Overcoming procrastination
Understanding personal dissatisfaction and transforming it
Strengthening self-esteem
Managing stress
Improving interpersonal relationships
Increasing emotional well-being, knowing how you feel and why
Couples coaching
Mental peace
Deprogramming: eliminating limiting beliefs and building new ways of thinking
Professional Area:
Developing your career
Balancing personal and professional life
Developing leadership skills
Improving communication and team management skills
Starting a new project
Systems thinking
Successfully adapting to major changes
What is a coaching process like?
A coaching process consists of a number of customized sessions designed to help you make progress in any area of your life. The coach accompanies you for a certain period, but the goal is for you to learn to walk alone. In my sessions, the average duration is 10 to 20 weeks, depending on the complexity of the issue, to see significant improvement.
What will I find in a coaching session?
From my experience, a coaching session is a safe and judgment-free space where you will find openness and support. It’s a place where you will feel accompanied in your process of reflection and overcoming. My goal is to help you take flight towards a new version of yourself, using practical and conversational tools that will lead you to your best self 2.0.
For me, the coach-coachee relationship is profoundly rewarding. Each of your advances is a shared achievement. My favorite moment is when I tell you, “You don’t need any more sessions; you’re ready to go on your own.” That is the WOW moment, when I know we’ve done good work together.
Why start a coaching process?
Because you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. Coaching allows you to progress, improve, and prioritize your well-being. It gives you the tools and clarity needed to transform your life.
